Best-of guides

Best small business insurance, by category

Editorial rankings for the buyer categories that matter. Head queries, policy lines, business segments, industries, and intent queries. Each page applies our six-dimension scoring framework with category-specific weighting, and explicitly discloses every carrier we evaluated and chose not to rank.

12 best-of guides published How we rank carriers

Most affiliate sites rank carriers on commission rather than buyer fit. Our rankings are editorially ordered, methodology-grounded, and explicitly transparent about why each carrier sits at its rank. And which carriers we evaluated and excluded, with the methodology-grounded reason for each omission.

Head queries

The broadest buyer questions. When readers haven't narrowed to a policy line or business profile yet.

By policy line

When the buyer knows which coverage they need. Different lines have different dimension weighting in our methodology.

By business segment

Sole proprietors, LLCs, and other entity-shape segments have different fit profiles even within the same policy line.

By industry

Industry-segmented rankings where carrier appetite varies materially by class code.

By intent

Buyers searching for a specific shopping experience. Lowest price, online-only, agent-assisted.

How these rankings are built

Every best-of guide on this page applies the same six-dimension scoring framework: financial strength, claims handling, coverage breadth, complaint history (3-year NAIC Consumer Information Source), pricing transparency, and customer experience. Different categories weight the dimensions differently. For example, the cyber liability ranking weights claims-handling and coverage-breadth heavier than pricing because cyber loss-event severity makes premium variance second-order to what's covered when an incident hits.

Each guide also includes a What we didn't include and why section that explicitly names the carriers we evaluated and chose not to rank, with the methodology-grounded reason. This is the part most affiliate sites omit.
